AZALEA PARK DESIGN COMMITTEE

DRAFT MEETING MINUTES

6:30 pm, Friday, July 9, 2004

 3934 Manzanita Drive

Attendance – Liz, Harmon, Rick, Tom, Larry, Amy, Vicki, Linda, Shane, Evie, Maxx

1.      Member input –      Vicki stated that she would check on the arts grant. Amy announced that her partner Michelle had given birth to their new son, Izak.

Tom stated that the Tot Lot construction includes ADA accessible ramp to the community center. This would be a great opportunity to do a project that blends with the identification signage theme, and could be done for $500 or less. The park and the contractor both seem open to the idea. There is a 3-4 week window to get this done in. The committee offered ideas including pressing imprints in the concrete or a mosaic tile border.  Tom stated that he would continue working on getting approval.

2.      Approval of minutes from 6/25/04 – approved with changes.

3.      Presentation of Conceptual Designs - Harmon Nelson and his associate Rick presented three design concepts for the neighborhood identification signs. One concept was removed from the options after the committee decided that it involved too much hardscape. The Committee commented on their favorite parts of each of the remaining designs. Some of the favorite elements were the tall trellis-like structures, and use of circular designs for planers and paving in the first concept, and the use of natural materials, irregularly shaped objects for mosaic art to be placed on, and seating area shown in the second design. In both designs, the focus on the park as the primary location, and the use of both sides of Poplar plus the median at the Poplar/Fairmont location were appreciated. The Committee then asked Harmon and Rick if they could come up with a third conceptual design that incorporated some of the preferred elements from each of the two designs. The Committee also reminded Harmon that the park location would need a structure to house bulletins and other information about the neighborhood.  Harmon agreed to do this and return with the designs in time for the neighborhood association meeting.

Tom also asked if it would be possible to have banners on the signs that could be changed periodically. After considerable discussion, it was decided that this would be best if it were a separate project at separate locations.
