Azalea Park Art Sale Story

From the estate of
KARL MISSLER

THE KARL MISSLER LEGACY
By Linda Pennington

Karl Missler, a long time resident of Azalea Park, passed away on November 25, 2002 at the age of eighty-six. He was a very colorful character who rode his bike around Mid City and liked to discuss philosophy with anyone who had a moment. He gave away books and paintings to friends of all ages. We all miss him very much.

Karl lived a very frugal life. He clipped coupons and would show me grocery receipts that indicated a 75% savings on the total bill. He often chastised me for not clipping coupons.

Karl left his entire estate (except for the contents of his house) to the United Negro College Fund. After his house was sold the amount came to approximately three quarters of a million dollars. Karl saw that African Americans were treated unfairly in his lifetime and he wanted to help.

Karl left the contents of his house to long time friend, artist Chuck Rucker who had bought frames from “The Picture Mart”, Karl’s framing business located on Poplar St. from the 50’s to 1963. Chuck generously donated Karl’s amazing collection of over one thousand original paintings to the Azalea Park Neighborhood Association.
